Boeing 747-400 Freighter Values Reflect Continued Market Demand

Recent industry analysis has highlighted continued strength in the market for Boeing 747-400 freighter aircraft.

An article published by Air Cargo News in August 2026, drawing on research by aviation consultancy IBA, reported that base values for factory-built and converted Boeing 747-400 freighters increased by an average of 114% between the second and third quarters of 2026.

According to the report, the increase reflects a combination of factors, including sustained demand for high-capacity freighter aircraft, particularly within Asia-Pacific markets, as well as the continuing economic value of the aircraft’s engines and components. IBA’s analysis also noted that this resilience comes despite the average age of the global 747-400 freighter fleet exceeding 26 years.

The findings provide an interesting perspective on a type of aircraft that continues to play an important role in global air cargo.

Market demand remains an important consideration

The Air Cargo News report notes that newer-generation freighter aircraft are expected progressively to enter the global market. However, IBA’s assessment indicates that the transition away from existing 747-400 freighters is unlikely to happen immediately, with demand for the aircraft expected to remain robust in the nearer term.

This is also reflected in recent activity elsewhere in the international air cargo sector, where established operators continue to acquire and operate 747-400 freighters to provide capacity and fleet flexibility.

The recent independent analysis of the 747-400 freighter market represents a noteworthy industry development and provides useful context on the continuing role and market relevance of this aircraft type.
